Majors fend off the Attack

"Owen Sound, already without star forward Joey Hishon, lost captain Garrett Wilson midway through the first period. Wilson was checked heavily into the boards and wasn’t able to return. Now he and Hishon may not be available for tonight’s game.

“Obviously, the hit on Wilson is a factor for our team,” said Reeds. “Another one of our leadership guys wasn’t able to finish the game.”

Wilson will be evaluated in the morning but Reeds didn’t sound optimistic about his availability when he spoke at a post-game news conference.

“You know, when an athlete starts asking the same question over and over again, then that’s reason to have concern,” said the coach, crediting the decision by team athletic therapist Andy Brown to take Wilson out of the game."

Fraser: How do officials stay in play but out of the way?

"The puck took a quick rise off Tony's stick and I just missed blocking it with my elbow before it struck me directly in the face. The puck broke my nose, fractured my tooth and split my lip for seven stitches.

When I blew the whistle, blood sprayed out of the air hole. Ron Francis of the Pens displayed a look of shock as he caught a glimpse of me. I couldn't continue in this condition and Hawks athletic therapist Mike Gapski escorted me off the ice for repairs. Walking through the Hawk bench, I paused and informed coach Darryl Sutter that we had to stop the game while I got stitched up. Sutter shook his head in disgust and said "F%&*# Kerry, hurry up and get back. We're pressing.""

Boogaard always a favourite in Minnesota

"“He was the perfect fit here,’’ Wild athletic therapist Don Fuller said. “It can be seen by how much the fans loved him.

“The fans also loved him because of what he did off the ice. He was such a giving person, whether it was with the children’s hospital or the military. I knew that he did a fair amount of stuff, but it wasn’t until after his passing that I realized how much charitable work he did do. It’s commendable for him, and it speaks volumes about how big a heart he had.’’"

Lang taking patient approach

"The contract of trainer/athletic therapist Greg Mayer is also set to expire. However, progress has been made on that front and the Pats are expected to offer him an extension. Mayer is a long-time associate of Hunt, who's in the midst of preparations for the Pats' upcoming spring camp (May 27-29).

"He's under contract," Lang said of Hunt. "Until we make a change or if we make a change, he's under contract. From our standpoint, nothing changes. There's work to do, there's preparation to do, not only for spring camp but the upcoming season. That's kind of the expectation.""

Radical changes needed to stop concussions: expert

"(Chris) Nowinski was speaking in Calgary along with Goulet, Calgary Stampeders medical services director Pat Clayton, Dr. Carolyn Emery, professor of pediatric rehabilitation at the University of Calgary, and Brady Greening, the director of health services and head athletic therapist at the Edge School.

All speakers alluded to the fact that children are much more susceptible to concussions. Nowinski said because their brains are developing, they are more sensitive to the excitotoxic shock of a concussion. Other factors are weak necks and torsos that can’t distribute force of the body well, poor equipment, exposure to coaches of various levels of training, and have poor language skills to communicate concussion symptoms.

Helmets are one element in prevention, according to Nowinski, but rule and culture changes also need to be enforced."

Riders’ Durant was an early bloomer

"The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ marquee player cheerfully signed autographs alongside fellow quarterbacks Ryan Dinwiddie and Cole Bergquist as part of the kickoff to KidSport Month.

Afterward, Durant fielded a lighthearted question about whether he would have to consult Roughriders athletic therapist Ivan Gutfriend to deal with writer’s cramp.

"We have to throw this afternoon at three o’clock,” Durant said with a chuckle. “I have to make sure I get a little rehab, just to get it right for this afternoon.”"
