Nanaimo therapist will travel with national team to Mexico

"A Nanaimo sports therapist is accompanying the Canadian women's national field hockey team to the Pan-Am Games this week.

Noreen Ortilla is one of the official athletic therapists for the squad in Guadalajara, Mexico. Ortilla, owner of Elite Performance Athletic Therapy in Nanaimo, has been working with the team for the past three years and this year Canada can qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London.

She has traveled with the women for many other international competitions, but this trip is special, Ortilla explained.

"This will be my first major games with this particular team," Ortilla said. "There are only a few hundred staff around the country that are privileged to share time with these amaz-ing people, all national team athletes."

Mount Royal athletic therapist heads to Pan American Games

"It takes time, training and years of dedication for athletes to make it to the world stage and compete for their country at the Pan American Games.

Little do people know, that much like athletes it takes years of dedication and preparation to their profession for athletic therapists to be able to represent their country at the games.

Khatija Westbrook, head athletic therapist at Mount Royal University, feels honoured to work alongside world-class athletes. She was recently chosen to go to the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, from Oct. 14-30 that features athletes from North, South and Central America.

"We all are excited to help the athletes excel," she says. "It is quite an honour to be given the opportunity to help them reach their dreams.""
...
"Brennan Mahon, a student athletic therapist who works with the MRU Cougars men's basketball team, says that no one ever thinks about how difficult it is for the trainers to make it to world- level sports events such as the Pan Am Games.

"It is very impressive that she gets to go," Mahon says. "As difficult as it is for an athlete to make it, I think the ratio for athletic therapists they allow is similar — so few get to go."
"
...
"Joelle Sexsmith, a fourth year MRU student in the athletic therapy program believes that the officials made the right selection.

"This is such an amazing opportunity for her. She is so brilliant. I know she will do a good job.""

Local duo working for Team Canada at Rugby World Cup

""It's pretty unbelievable," said Carla Brash, who is taking time off from her job as a certified athletic therapist with the Kingston Athletic Therapy Centre to work as an athletic therapist with Team Canada."
...
"But last week, Canada opened with a 25-20 win over Tonga in Whangarei, opening the eyes of New Zealand fans in the process.

"Oh my goodness, it was unreal," Brash said of the upset in front of a sellout crowd of close to 18,000 at the Northland Events Centre.

Canadian flanker Adam Kleeberger, who has a bigger, bushier beard than ex-Kingston Kimco Voyageurs assistant coach Peter Goulet sported in the 2009 RBC Cup run, also has become a mini-celebrity in New Zealand.

"They're selling fake beards," Brash said. "They are sold out everywhere. ... He's had that beard going for seven or eight months."

Brash has worked for rugby teams for the past nine years, leading to a call from the national program four years ago.

In November, she found out she was heading to the biggest stage in the sport. The journey started with a two-week training camp in Australia.

"It's been a goal of mine to make it here," she said. "It's a huge accomplishment for me."

While it sounds like a dream trip, there has been precious little down time — Brash has fit in some deep-sea fishing (one Canadian player actually caught a shark, she says) and a wine tour.

On her first day off of the tournament earlier this week, Brash said she simply stayed in her room and watched TV.

"There are lots of bumps and bruises and things like that," Brash said of the daily grind of working for a rugby team. "It's such a physical sport that you treat them every day, sometimes twice a day.""

Kingston athletic therapist travels to Rugby World Cup

"This year, there is a Kingston connection to the Rugby World Cup. Carla Brash, Certified Athletic Therapist at the Kingston Athletic Therapy Centre, has been working with the national team for the past four years, travelling everywhere from Fiji to New Zealand to Belgium, as well as all over Canada and the U.S. Brash is responsible for the assessment and treatment of acute injuries, as well as pre-game taping and strapping, immediate on-field First Aid and post-event recovery and treatments.

"There is a lot of work to do and most days are 12-14-hour days, however, it is a very rewarding job when all your hard work pays off and we qualify for the Rugby World Cup," says Brash.

Over the years, she has developed a real love for the game of rugby and remarks that she has been working up to this tournament since the first game she ever covered eight years ago."

Guelph’s MacDougall takes aim at Olympic berth

"Her gym workouts were set up by Alicia Crelinsten, the head athletic therapist at the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario.

“She gives me archery-specific exercises so I look like a silly person in the gym with my rubber bands and my medicine balls, but if people took the time to come up to me, they’d realize how difficult the exercises I’m doing actually are,” MacDougall says. “I have a whole list of archery-specific exercises I have to do and I have a cardio set that I have to do and I have a weight set that I have to do. I do those two to three times a week.”"
